What Is a Dental Crown?

Crowns are a good option for people looking to repair their damaged teeth. A dental crown is essentially a cap that is placed over a damaged tooth. It mimics the shape, color, and feel of a natural tooth to restore your smile.

Porcelain Crowns

At Asprakis and Danti Dentistry, we have many years of experience in repairing teeth with porcelain crowns, which are now the leading material over metal crowns. Porcelain is the most natural option and blends seamlessly with your teeth. It is also a great option for people with metal allergies or sensitivities.

Why Might I Need a Crown?

There are many reasons one might need a dental crown–if you are experiencing any of the issues we’ve laid out below, a crown may be the right treatment choice for you. Ready to take the next step? Get in touch with your dentist today!

Restore a Broken Tooth

If you’ve broken a tooth, a crown may be the best option to restore it.

Protect a Weak Tooth

When a tooth is structurally weak from a previous extensive filling and needs extra support. A crown will provide the protection it needs!

Cover a Discolored Tooth

If you have a tooth that is severely discolored, misshapen, or just unsightly, a dental crown is a great way to cover it up and bring your smile back to life! This is a better option if you only have one or a couple of unsightly teeth, as opposed to a whitening treatment or veneers.

Other Reasons To Get a Crown

  • When a large cavity cannot just be filled
  • To anchor a bridge
  • To cover an implant
  • To restore a tooth after a root canal

What Does the Procedure Look Like?

Getting dental crowns typically takes two visits to the dentist from the start of the procedure. The dentist will need to first examine your damaged tooth and take X-rays to determine if the tooth is a candidate for a crown. You may also need a filling to support the broken tooth as well. At the first appointment, they will trim the tooth to make room for the cap, they will then take a mold of the trimmed tooth. Your dentist will place a temporary plastic crown over the tooth while the porcelain crown is being made. You will then be scheduled back in a couple of weeks to have the porcelain crown cemented on.

After The Procedure

Now that procedure is finished and you have your crown, there are still steps you must take to take proper care of it! A crown can last many years if you take care of it properly, but if not, it may eventually become loose or even fall out. Here are some guidelines laid out by WebMD:

Most importantly, make sure you are continuing to practice good oral hygiene–this means brushing twice a day and flossing at least once a day. You should also be consistent with visiting the dentist regularly to ensure that your crown is holding up and being cleaned properly. While you have a temporary crown, you should brush very gently and avoid very hard foods.
